What is a golf marathon? A true test of endurance where approximately 60 golfers of all skill levels are sponsored to play 100 holes of golf in one day, raising $250,000 collectively to positively impact the life of cancer patients.
After getting funding from Golf Fights Cancer, Charles W. M. Roberts, M.D, PhD, established collaboration with other investigators at Dana-Farber to perform a broad vulnerability screen against cells from large number (182) of different cancers. Using cutting edge gene engineering technology, they evaluated the effects of specifically targeting 9,000 different genes in these cancer cell lines. “Our work has moved rapidly and the impact of their research and its relevance to many cancers has rapidly grown”, said Dr. Roberts. “Bottom line – the support from Golf Fights Cancer has made a major difference for us and has enabled us to propel our work forward.”
Craig and Maureen Fitzgerald have long cheered on countless Boston Marathon runners from their home alongside the marathon course. Inspired to get off the sidelines and into the race, Craig (’12, ’13, ’14) and Maureen (’14) have been powerful fundraisers for GFC as well, raising more than $50,000!
